ESPN2 contracted Broadcast Management Group’s Todd Mason to provide creative services and help launch their “Cold Pizza” series. Todd was brought in during the series development phase to help brainstorm the show format and develop a technical plan and budget for producing the show. Todd and his team were given the challenge of a tight budget and a time limit of 9 months to develop and build out all elements needed for the production.
The two-hour daily live production covered sports, news and entertainment and featured a host, co-host and up to fifteen remotes and guest segments. The program required the capability to feature live multi-camera segments from the streets of New York City.
Todd and his team went to work developing the show, which included securing, designing and building-out the studio, control room, news room, and edit facilities. They also provided production staffing support – hiring and training all of the technical staff. The show was shot from a studio in New York City using five studio cameras and a jib. To meet the budgetary and technical requirements of the show, Todd and his team worked with major manufacturers to build the first completely tapeless broadcast operation. This technology breakthrough allowed Todd to provide an amazing turn-around of packages, updates and re-airs, while meeting a very aggressive budget.
