Vanity Fair contracted Broadcast Management Group to provide live production support, production staffing, and technical execution for their 3rd annual “Vanity Fair Oscars Party Show”. The 2-hour production featured Vanity Fair correspondents conducting live interviews with celebrity guests as they arrived at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, immediately after the Oscars live broadcast. The program streamed live to Twitter and the Vanity Fair website.
Leading up to the live production, Broadcast Management Group participated in weekly production calls to review the progress of the project. We made technical recommendations and suggestions on the best way to accomplish Vanity Fair’s goals and objectives. In addition, we learned about their program from years past – specifically what worked and what didn’t work – so we could make needed technical adjustments in our approach.
The live production took place at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills. Because our production was one piece of the larger Vanity Fair event, we were met with specific venue challenges that we had to plan for. The biggest issue was the size of our control room – we only had a 10’ x 10’ space to work with. This meant segmenting some of our production equipment, then cabling between the different locations. Our production switcher, audio console, and video monitoring were setup a few hundred feet from the main host position, while graphics, encoding, video shading, and playback were stationed inside the Wallis Annenberg Center.
Broadcast Management Group’s VP of Engineering and Production Engineer led the technical execution of the Vanity Fair Oscars Party Show, filling the rolls of EIC and Camera Operator. All other production staff were booked locally in Los Angeles. Production staffing for the Vanity Fair project was challenging due to the amount of production happening in Los Angles during Oscars weekend, including our live production for IMDb.
The program was shot with 6 cameras, including 3 cameras on the Vanity Fair red carpet, 1 remote camera outside the Wallis Annenberg Center, 1 remote camera inside the Wallis Annenberg Center, and 1 drone. Broadcast Management Group provided all of the production equipment and engineering support, which included use of our own Tricaster TC1 flight pack, Behringer audio flight pack, and FreeSpeak comms system.
